Adolf Hitler (1889–1945), leader of the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei – National Socialist German Workers‘ Party), chancellor of Germany 1933, head of state and supreme leader ("Führer") 1934­–45. His policy of territorial expansion led to the Second World War. Hitler committed suicide shortly before German surrender in 1945. He was responsible for the death of millions of people through war and genocide.
