Die erste Weltausstellung fand 1851 im eigens dafür errichteten Kristallpalast im Londoner Hyde Park statt. Diese Great Exhibition, die v.a. von Prinz Albert (1819–1861), dem Ehemann von Queen Victoria (1819–1901), gefördert wurde, war ein großer Erfolg – sie zählte mehrere Millionen Besucher.
