Der amerikanische Psychologe Edward C. Tolman (1886–1959) forschte zum Raumverständnis von Ratten und baute dafür auch die hier abgebildete Labyrinth-Konstruktion. Er entwickelte das Konzept der cognitive map, das in den 1960er Jahren auch von der Geographie und der Stadtplanung aufgegriffen wurde und schließlich auch für die Geschichtswissenschaft als mental map relevant wurde.
