Colonial Exhibition in Berlin 1896

Posters were the most important advertising medium for the organizers of 'Völkerschauen' and typically reflected the stereotypes that were most rooted in the minds of the public. Africans were thus often depicted with weapons, as in this poster for the colonial exhibition in Berlin in 1896.
