Modern Rome is a pendant to Ancient Rome and was commissioned by the comte de Stainville, later Duc de Choiseul (1719–1785), the French ambassador to the papal court from 1753 to 1757. In the lower half of the painting he is shown seated in an armchair. The painting depicts some of the city's most famous modern monuments in Rome at the time, among them, for example, Michelangelo's (1475–1564) Moses and statues by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680).
