Pyramides de Memphis, Vue générale des pyramides et du sphinx prise au soleil couchant

This engraving shows another view of the Sphinx from volume 5. An extremely wide angle offers a panoramic view of the pyramids and the Sphinx in the setting sun. On its back and head, various figures can be seen examining, measuring and drawing the monument. As in the following illustration, here we are witnesses to the emergence of the "scientific drawing" as a specific type of illustration emerging in the context of scientific and colonial expeditions.
