Greta Garbo (1905–1990), geboren als Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, stammte aus Stockholm und wurde nach ihrer Entdeckung durch Hollywood zu einer schauspielerischen Legende. Sie wirkte u.a. auch in einigen Filmen mit Bezug zur europäischen Literatur mit, so etwa in zwei Adaptionen von Lev Tolstojs (1828–1910) Roman Anna Karenina (USA 1927, 1935) und in der Verfilmung Camille (USA 1936) von Alexandre Dumas' (1824–1895) Roman La dame aux camélias.
