El Greco (ca. 1541–1614), Christ Blessing, ca. 1600

This later painting by El Greco shows Christ with elongated features, his right hand raised in a blessing while his left hand is placed on a sphere. A Byzantine-inspired halo illuminates his head from behind. Made by El Greco when he moved from Crete to Toledo after spending some years in Venice and Rome, both the iconography and the composition of his painting seem inspired by his former style, recalling Byzantine-type paintings. The representation also evokes the Byzantine traditional iconography of the Pantokrator (Christ as Ruler of All). Christ is depicted both as the "Saviour of the World" and the "Light of the World".
